Sluys’ Poulsbo Bakery is a small, family-owned bakery located in Poulsbo, WA, on Liberty Bay. We create natural grain, rye and sourdough breads, delicious donuts and pastries, and specialty desserts—all made from scratch. We think that the old way is the best way when it comes to baked goods, which is why all the breads and pastries we make are handmade in small batches, using only fresh ingredients.

Sluys Poulsbo Bakery is my favorite bakery! We discovered this local destination on a recent family trip to Poulsbo and were blown away seeing the lines outside that lasted all day. It’s hard to choose what to order with so many options, but we selected 2 loaves of the famous Poulsbo Bread, a cinnamon twist, cardamom roll, cinnamon roll, tea cookies, lemon bars, raspberry cookies and bars. All were delicious! Everything is made from scratch and you can appreciate it in every bite. Breakfast toast made with the Poulsbo bread is a treat, we enjoyed the cinnamon pastries with coffee and the cookies as a sweet dessert. We’ll need to plan a day trip to visit this wonderful bakery again in the near future!

Amazing home town bakery. By the traffic/lines you know this bakery deserves SIX STARS. I travel to Poulsbo about every 3 years - this is a destination and a trip not to be missed when in town. The pastries are fresh and the variety is great. The service is wonderful - these people know how to service a lot of people without compromising the friendly welcoming feeling.

Definitely the best baked goods I've had in a while. Was driving back to Seattle from Port Angeles and craving a coffee and something sweet. Googled bakeries near me and Sluys popped up top of the list. Knew Poulsbo must be Scandinavian somehow but didn't know until we drove into town how cute it all was. Pastries here were pure buttery goodness! Wish we lived closer (love in CO, so bit of a drive for breakfast). Highly recommend if driving through the area!! Parking is an issue, but we found a space near the waterfront and walked back there to the cool folding bench/picnic table combos.

The History of our Handmade Bakery

The history of our bakery goes back more than a century and for us, that heritage is important! It explains not only how we became the full line bakery we are today, but also why we rely so heavily on old-style baking techniques and why everything we make is handmade with care.

In the early 1900s, the Star Bakery began as a wholesale baking distribution center. Eventually, it changed to the Poulsbo Bakery, delivering breads all over the Kitsap Peninsula and Mason County. As the years progressed and Poulsbo, WA grew in size, the bakery became more of a retail shop. Soon, it became Bauer’s Bake Shop—but it wasn’t long before Marion and Loretta Sluys’ purchased Bauer’s Bake Shop, and renamed it Sluys’ Poulsbo Bakery in 1966. Sluys’ Poulsbo Bakery is now run by Daniel and Stephanie K Sluys. Daniel is the son of Marion and Loretta, and has been working in the bakery since he was eight years old.

Many of our products are original recipes, including Soriah, Brod, Sweet Black, Norwegian Black, Farmers, and Jalapeno Cheese. Other recipes from Old World Norway, such as Julekake, Stollen, Cardamom bread, Kransekake and Fattigmand.
